The city’s tradition since 1873, the Carnival of Viareggio

|
| |
Perugia and Umbria. February 28 - July
18, 2004 |
|
| |
For
five months, the entire region of Umbria is transformed into a great
museum celebrating the activity of a painter whose original and
highly personal sign-language stands out in the history of Renaissance
art. Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria, Rocca Paolina, and abbazia
di San Pietro in Perugia, Città della Pieve, Museo Regionale
della Ceramica in Deruta, and the church of San Francesco in Corciano
are the venues that host a series of thematic exhibitions not only
to present an overall view of Perugino’s works but also to
reconstruct the itinerary of his artistic training, to recreate
his historical context, to illustrate his models and consequently
the ultimate reasons for his originality. Catalogue by Silvana Editoriale

The Age of Rubens - Palaces, Patrons and
Collectors of Genoa
|
|
| |
Palazzo Ducale, Genoa. March 20 – July 11,
2004 |
|
| |
This
exhibition highlights the specificity of 17th century collecting
in Genoa at the time of Rubens’ first visit to the city in
1604, when Genoa was at the height of its economic power as a Marine
Republic of Italy. Bankers, financiers and great merchants of Genoa
found themselves with a great quantity of resources to invest and
thus a rich culture of collecting rare and interesting artistic
works flourished. Conceived and curated by Piero Boccardo, the exhibition
includes a section presented in the rooms of Palazzo Spinola National
Gallery, a palace chosen by Peter Paul Rubens for inclusion in his
volume The Palaces of Genoa dedicated to the “very beautiful
and most comfortable residences” and first published in Antwerp
in1622. Another section is housed in the rooms of Palazzo Rosso
in the beautiful Via Garibaldi in the historic center of Genoa,
recently restored to its original splendor to celebrate the city
of Genoa named the European Capital of Culture for 2004. Sponsored
by the Fondazione Carige. Catalogue by Skira. www.palazzoducale.genova.it
